Wine-Making In N.Z.

Sir,—ln reply to “1.5. T. first, I am glad the lads turned out so well. Second, there is room for difference of opinion, I think good statesmanship would limit the size of vineries and wine production in New Zealand. Third, wine sometimes is altered by the addition of alcohol. If my memory serves me right, up to 4 per cent, proof spirit being contained in it. Fourth,, perhaps unfortified winedrinking is too often the first step towards the stronger, more harmful drinks mentioned by “1.5. T. Doctors, and at least one Cabinet Minister, were publicly appealing a year or two ago to the people to try to check the ravages of alcohol in France. All this when thousands of people live happily and more healthily, without ever tasting intoxicants.—Yours, etc., FRED T. MILES. Ashburton, March 21, 1960.
