Consumer Council Reports
Sir,—The suggestions by the Manufacturers’ Association that they should have pre-publication knowledge of Consumer Council reports, and make comments (excuses) on the tests would undermine the whole principle’of Consumer Council activity. This is not to report on the manufacturer’s products as such, but to report on the goods purchased by the average customer. I understand the New Zealand council is patterned on the American Consumer Union and British Consumer Association. The latter’s policy is quoted from the November issue of “Which.” “Everything we investigate is bought in retail shops, for the normal price, as it would be bought by any other shopper. The goods are bought in different types of shops and whenever it seems advisable, in different parts of the country.” This is the essence of consumer investigation and any association with the manufacturers or interference by them would be quite unwarranted.—Yours, etc., .w J - W ’ REED - March bl, 1960.
