Sportsman’s Notebook AUSTRALIAN FOUR TESTS AVERAGES

The averages of the New Zealand and Australian sides for the four unofficial tests show both teams to be fairly equal in batting performances, but show the Australian bowling to be vastly more impressive. Led by R. B. Simpson, with his great total of 418 runs, three Australian batsmen averaged more than 30. Three New Zealand batsmen, led by J. R. Reid, also averaged more than 30. Reid’s average of 41.7 was beneath both Simpson and L. Maddocks, but his aggregate of 297 was second only to Simpson’s. The visiting bowlers were amazingly consistent —the nine main bowlers all averaged under 30 runs a wicket. F. Misson gained 17 wickets—easily the highest total—at the fine average of 11.9. a wicket. R. Gaunt, playing in only three of the tests, bowled the greatest number of overs of either side. In comparision, only three of the eight main New Zealand bowlers averaged less than 30 runs a wicket, with none reaching under 20. The most Impressive aspects of their averages were G.. A. Bartlett’s 158 overs at the young age of 19. arid J. T. Sparling’s 43 maiden overs from a total of 87. Details are:—

Ski-ing Titles

The Canterbury ski-ing championships this winter will be organised on a different basis. As a result of general dissatisfaction over the combination of teams' and individual racing at the championships. the Canterbury Ski Association has decided to hold two separate championship meetings —one for individual’ racing, which will determine the respective champions, and another for teams’ racing where no times will be published and competitors will race under their team captains’ instructions. The individual titles will be held at the Craigieburn Valley field on August 6 and 7. and the inter-club titles at Mount Cheeseman on September 24 and 25..

Golf Contender When he headed the field in the Auckland Golf Association’s pennant and trial matches played at Akarana this week, B. Vezich, of Titirangi, showed that he will be a serious contender for this year’s Freyberg Rosebowl team. He scored a scratch 70 in his morning round and a brilliant 68 in the afternoon for an aggregate 138. Together with W. J. Godfrey’s 141-stroke total for second place, this put Titirangi well in the lead in the pennant competition. * $ Surprise Polo Win A spectacular win over the visiting Santa Barbara (California) polo team was scored by the Morrinsville representatives last week-end. The team won by 6 goals to 2. Santa Barbara’s only points came from two penalty goals hit by the team captain. R. Skene.
