ISLANDS BANANA CROP
Possibility Of Shortage
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 14. Although there were adequate supplies of bananas in Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga, the supply in Samoa was not up to expectations, and a shortage there could result in a shortage here later this year, said the general manager of Fruit Distributors (Mr A. C. Walker) today. “A severe storm was experienced in Samoa in December, and blew down a large number of plants, particularly on the island of Upolo,” Mr Walker said.
“The main supply of bananas at present is coming from Savaii, which has no anchorage or berthing facilities, and there is the problem of bringing fruit to Apia in the limited number of small vessels available for this work.
“Supplies are coming forward from Fiji and Tonga, but the quantity available in these islands reduces considerably during the winter."
