BISHOP UNDER ARREST

“Anti-Jugoslav Activity”

(Rec. 10 p.m.) BELGRADE, March 13.

Smiljan Franjo Cekada, the 58-year-old Roman Catholic Bishop of Skoplje. Macedonia, has been arrested and will be tried in Jugoslavia next week on charges of anti-State activity, informed sources said yesterday. Jugoslav police officials in Skoplje refused to confirm the reports, which said two other oriests had also been arrested there.

The trial would be the first in Jugoslavia involving a Roman Catholic bishop for at least six years.

The sources said the exact charge brought against the bishop was not known, but it was understood that he will be accused of maintaining links with Ustashi emigres aboard. The Ustashi are a Croat nationalist organisation which formed the puppet state of Croatia under Nazi domination during World War 11.
