Estuary Dam Proposal

Sir,—To place a dam across the Avon-Heathcote estuary ihouth for the control of water levels would add to the silting problem and tend to limit the economic value of the scheme; whereas the removal of the accumulation of silt by dredging the tidal channels to reclaim the extensive mud flats would have enormous economic and recreational values. The possible development of an aquatic play place ideally situated needs no imagination. The panoramic view of 60 small boats of all shapes and sizes, whose crew members were enjoying fun and games during a recent weekend, was delightful. Rusting sections of a pontoon dredge lay nearby as a silent memorial for a scheme to reclaim the mudflats.—Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE. March 8, 1960.
