Samuel Butler Centenary
Sir, —The initiative of the librarian of the Turnbull Library (Mr C. R. H. Taylor) in the commemoration of Butler’s arrival in Canterbury 100 years ago is to be commended and it is hoped those with Butler material will cooperate towards the successful publication of the proposed booklet. But since location of such material (letters, diaries, pictures, etc.) tends to raise questions of its acquisition presently or ultimately by the locating library it is not improper to draw attention to the desirability of keeping such material here in Canterbury. May we therefore appeal to those who have this material to advise one of us (each of whom undertakes to pass on all such intelligence to Mr Taylor) or at least to advise us in addition to advising the Turnbull Library.—Yours, etc., R. N. O’REILLY, Canterbury Public Library. C. W. COLLINS, Library, University of Canterbury. J. C. WILSON, Library, Canterbury Museum. March 11, 1960.
