RAIN DID NOT STOP SHOW AT MAYFIELD

Heavy rain lashing Canterbury on Saturday did nothing to stop the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s thirtyfifth annual show on the Mayfield Domain and although not so many attended as in other years, the local people gave it solid support. The weather brightened to a heavy overcast just before 2 p.m., giving a lift to the ring programme, going on only a little behind schedule.

Speaking just after the grand parade had ended, the association’s president (Mr R. W. Oakley) said: “The weather has not been too good, but the show has gone on just the same, and I think we all had a good day.” During the morning judging and competitions went on in spite of the rain, but the compact trade show section, the children’s rides and merry-go-round and sideshow alley had to wait until the weather cleared before drawing anyone away from the ring. The ring kept in good condition throughout the day and the brighter afternoon Cancelled worries that the jumping and the grand parade might not be held. Fewer Entries There were 2850 entries for the show—down on last year. According to the secretary (Mr J. P. McDonnell) the drop in entries was mainly in the children’s and juveniles' sections. Gate takings were only £63, less than half the money • collected by the gatekeepers last year. j Mr D. Robertson (Southland), Southdown sheep judge, said the standard was good and competition excellent.

“This is far better than you see at metropolitan shows, but autumn shows might be more favoured than spring shows,” he said.

The placed sheep were all of good standard and the champion and reserve rams were excellent specimens of the breed, Mr Robertson said.

“Some of the unplaced sheep were too dark in colour and not typical of the breed. The winning ram and ewe hoggets in all sections were outstanding,” he added. Mr H. Cross (Balclutha) Romney ewe judge, said in his section standards were very good, with strong competition. He added that the two-tooth .ewe class was very strong and the open ewe class was very good. Mr K. V. Hood, halfbred and flock sheep judge, said in the adult ewe class the first prize winner was a good all-round ewe, carrying quite good fleece and with good carriage. "In the ewe lambs there was very, very little between the first and second prize winners. Both lambs were of nice quality. Outstanding Pen

“In flock sheep the winning pen of one-shear ewes was outstanding, well brought out and carry-

ing excellent fleece,” he said.

Mr J. A. Love (Ashburton), three-fiuarter and crossbred judge, said competition was not quite so good as in previous years and not so strong as it could have been.

“The prize-winning pen in crossbred was showing a beautiful crimp and would compare with anything else in the South Island.

“The prize-winning pen in the three-quarterbred were wellgrown and showing good character in the wool,” Mr Love added. The pig judge, Mr L. M. Ward, of Lincoln College, said he had been judging at the Mayfield show for six years and Saturday’s entries were “streets ahead of anything I have seen in that time.”

The standard had improved a lot. he added. Mrs D. F. Hargreaves, pony judge, of Geraldine, said there had been a high standard of both ponies and riding. “This is, of course, mainly attributable to the influence of the pony clubs and the hard work of the instructors,” she said. The results were:— Championship Awards Championships were awarded as follows:
