Record Entries, Good Attendance At Cheviot Show

In spite of a chilly wind and an overcast sky which threatened rain for most of the day there was a good attendance at the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 46th annual show on Saturday. Gate takings were about £77 compared with £76 last year and membership had increased by 28. Entries were at a record level of 2497 compared with 2306 last year. It easily beat the previous record set in 1954 when 2404 entries were catalogued. Sheep entries were a little down and there were fewer saddle horses and hunters but most other classes were at a better level.

Earlier in the morning there was a slight fall of rain but the weather was fine for the show and by after mid-day the car park was nearly full. Exhibitors came from a wide area of North Canterbury as well as the Cheviot county and competition in the main classes was good. The rain freshened the ring and the turf was in good condition and stood up well to the long series of horse and pony events. Sheep entries were generally of a good standard and competition was strong within the main breeds. More entries came forward in the wool section and the much better season was reflected in the increased entries of flowers and produce. The grand parade was led by the Addington Workshops* Brass Band and at the head of the parade of champions was Mrs E. G. Rutherford’s champion hack Blue Smoke followed by the reserve champion, Miss M. Wilding’s Timwiffler. Judges’ Comments

The best of the hacks were paraded in fine order and were a credit to their owners, the judge of the saddle horses and hunters (Mr D. Gould) said. They had been well schooled and were a good representation of the district’s horses. Mr Gould commented particularly on Mr E. A. Anderson who had given a fine display with his reserve champion cob Wally. “There are not many men of 73 in the show

♦ing today,” he said. Sheep judges were generally well pleased with the standard of their sections although there were a few faults. Mr G. E. Taylor, of Ward, who judged the Corriedale rams, said there had been good competition and entries represented the breed well. The champon ram, selected from the one-shear class and shown by D. W. Ensor, was a very good animal although it was perhaps a little too open in the face. Romneys on the whole pleased the judge, Mr F. H. Chittock, of Lincoln, and there were good numbers in the individual classes. The mixing of shorn and woolly exhibits in the ewe lamb and ram lamb classes had made judging difficult and he felt that there should be separate classes provided.

One criticism he had to make was that quite a number of sheep were not quite right in the mouths. Teeth were undershot in some cases and overshot in others.

Flock sheep classes were of a very good over-all standard and the lambs were particularly good, said the judge, Mr H. G. Lawrence, of Hawarden. The wool on the lambs was in first class order especially in the Corriedale ewe lamb class and entries in the Young Farmers’ Club classes were of an excellent standard. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Championships were awarded as follows: — Hunter: Mrs F. F. Wilding’s Pepperpot (reserve, G. McClintock’s Royal Mac). Hack: Mrs E. G. Rutherford s Blue Smoke (reserve, Miss M.
