WHISBY ROAD MILK
House Delivery
Ordered
Two members of the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board on Friday did a “notional” milk delivery to houses in Cashmere’s Whisby road to discover if the short, steep street was too difficult for the regular milkman. The “notional” delivery was made after complaints to the board from people living in Whisby road who said they did not like “point” delivery and wanted milk delivered to their houses.
Friday afternoon’s meeting of the board backed the opinion of the two members, the chairman (Mr W. E. Olds) and Mr W. J. Cowles, that the milkman should deliver to the houses in the street.
Before the meeting Mr Olds and Mr Cowles had gone to Whisby road so see how long it would take to deliver milk from either end of the street. Mr Olds said walking up from Macmillan avenue it took him and Mr Cowles three minutes—allowing for time to deliver milk and pick up bottles; walking down Whisby road from Dyers Pass road took about 2} minutes. “In ten minutes you could deliver all the milk required in Whisby road,” he told the milkman, Mr W. R. Colville, who was at the meeting. Mr Colville said he had a good truck, but he considered Whisby road was too steep for safety. Driving up from the bottom he took the risk of losing crates from his truck.
Mr Olds: You could try shanks’ pony. Mr Olds moved that Mr Colville should be instructed to deliver to the houses in Whisby road. His move was seconded by Mr Cowles who added that he “was not very, happy about talting the matter in open meeting.”
