VETERAN TRAIN EXCURSION

Locomotive Society’s Outing

Two of the oldest locomotives running on Government railway lines hauled four old-style carriages, packed with railway enthusiasts, from Christchurch to Wetheral, two miles and a half from Kaiapoi, on an excursion which lasted from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. A porter taken on at Kaiapoi walked in front of the two engines, waving a red flag when the train slowed to approach the two level crossings where the Ohoka road crossed and recrossed the Wetheral line. Tire line is used a flourmill. When the engines and carriages arrived back at Kaiapoi they were festooned with pieces of gorse and willow branches which had overgrown the track. One of the locomotives, named Peveril, was commissioned in 1872, and after 88 years’ service is stationed in Lyttelton as a relief shunter. The other engine, three years younger, is engaged on similar duties.

The Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, which organised the trip, plans a longer excursion in a modern train to Kaikoura in the spring. A car with a movie camera accompanied the train to make a record of the outing.
