Wainoni Girl Wins £7OO In Prizes

A Wainoni girl, Miss Eleanor Kirkwood, was crowned Queen of Industry at the New Zealand Industries Fair on Saturday evening.

Selected from nearly 50 contestants, Miss Kirkwood won £lOO in cash, given by the organiser of the fair, the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, and other prizes, including a sewing machine, clothes, and a return air trip to Auckland, valued at nearly £6OO. Second place, went to a married woman with two children. Mrs A. Shields, of Horotane Valley, and Miss Sandra Black, of Cashmere, was placed third. In the Princess of Industry contest, judged on Saturday afternoon. Miss Sonya Black—a sister of the third place-getter in the Queen of Industry contest —was placed first, with Miss Larraine Heath, of Westminster street, second, and Miss Denese Jarman, of Aranui, third. Miss Black won £5O in cash, given by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and other prizes valued at £5O. Before a large crowd in the entertainment hall at the fair on Saturday evening Miss Kirkwood was crowned Queen of Industry by the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr W. A. Bascand), and Miss Black was crowned Princess of Industry by the junior vice-presi-dent of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. G. Pearce).

Judges for the final of the Queen of Industry contest were Mrs A. J. Baker, of Buckett’s Gymnasium, Miss Geraldine McVeigh, assistant public relations officer for the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr H. C. Bradley, a physical culture expert. and Mr J. R. Maddren, a clothing manufacturer and a pastpresident of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Commenting on behalf of the judges. Mr Maddren said, in congratulating Miss Kirkwood, that there had been great public interest in the contest and, with the high standard of all the entrants, it had been very difficult to eliminate many of the contestants in the heats.

In a special junior Princess of Industry section—a last-minute alteration brought about by the low ages of some of the contestants—Chyril McConnell, of Cornwell street, won, with Tui Flesher, of Hornby, second, and Karon Earl and Judith Lyon, third equal. The compere for the contests was Jack Maybury.
