Outsider Wins First Leg At Hutt Park

■•The Press' UpecttU Serosce

WELLINGTON, March 13.

The Wellington-owned and Templeton-trained Whippy Dillon, which, after appearing to have trained off was under offer to an Australian buyer, sprang a major upset when he decisively won the Greyhound Handicap at the Hutt Park raceway on Saturday evening. .

This was the principal race and first leg of the double on the final night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s inaugural meeting under lights. The trainer-driver, W. R. Butt, had Whippy Dillon beautifully placed in the trailing position, and, after following Spring Chat into line, he finished on full of running to win by a length and a half, j

He was outsider but one in a field of 15. and paid £37 14s «d to win and £lO Is 6d for a place. Rehandicapped to 12 yards against the sprinters in the Farewell Handicap later in the evening, he proved that his win was no fluke by pacing a solid race for third. Whippy Dillon is raced by Mr M. A. Elder, a steward of the club. Two other stewards were successful owners. They were Mr R. A. McKenzie, whose trotter, Slayer, won the Roosevelt Handicap, and the Opiki trainerdriver, K. D. Fraser, whose stablemates, Wager and Nalder, finished first and second, well clear of their rivals in the Santa Anita Handicap. Butt had a good night He produced Johnny Brigade to take the second leg of the double, the Greyhound Handicap, with a bold exhibition of trotting from an awkward mark, and Orient Night to win the Baltimore Handicap. Although Johnny Brigade was favourite and off-course substitute for the Greyhound Handicap, the double paid £162 16s for £l. After a threatening day, the weather cleared, and the night was still and warm.

Rain had fallen during the previous evening and Saturday morn- j ing, but the track was in good s order and times in general only a little slower than on the first * two nights. An attendance of just more than 10,000 bet £77,846 < 10s on-coutse—£l6o-odd more than the 12,000 wagered on the ( second night, and just a little less than the amount put through by a crowd of 16.000 on the opening night. The total on-course betting for the meeting was £236,806, while off-course betting amounted to £190,613 ss, a total of £427,419 i ss. There were only two days 1 in March last year. First L»t 1 Finestra, Gay Alabama, Josie Gay, . Highland Don and Gay Baron were ’ all slow over the early stage of the , Ohio Handicap. Whippy Dillon began ' best, and shortly after was steadied to trail when Disraeli took the lead. With a round to travel, Disraeli . was leading from Spring Chat and Whippy Dillon, Southerner and Master Trick, Keif, Queen Ngalo. and Dame Sybil. Spring Chat headed off Disraeli on the top turn and led for home clear of whippy Dillon, with Disraeli tiring next, then Southerner. Highland Don (which bad made a big run). Queen Ngalo and Dame Sybil. Whippy Dillon challenged strongly on U)e outside and got up , to beat Spring Chat by half a length, with a length to Queen 1 Ngalo, Highland Don and Dame Sybil, which were only heada apart in that order. There was a gap to Disraeli, sixth, just ahead of Papatawa, which made up ground, then Keff, Master Trick and Responsive at the head of the others. Finestra and Josie Gay were pulled up. Broke at Start Glenmore broke at the start of the Greyhound Handicap and Jet Brigade and Van Andee made mistakes soon after. Lochhaven led out frort Rock’n Robin, with gaps to Care, Forenoon and Astoria, then Johnny Brigade, Safety Catch, Sure Maggie and Glenmore. Johnny Brigade, always trotting boldly, gradually Improved up on the outside to fee challenging Care and Lochhaven as they straightened up for the last time. Safety Catch and Sure Maggie were also coming into the picture at this stage. Johnny Brigade soon gained the upper hand and trotted the race out strongly to beat Care by a length and a half. Sure Maggie gave another excellent effort for third, a neck away, and a length back came Safety Catch, which was also doing his best work toward the enJ Astoria toiled on for fifth, ahead of Lochhaven. Jet Brigade. Rock'n Robin and Forenoon. Results:—
