PLAY RESTRICTED BY RAIN

Canterbury Team On West Coast

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. March 13.

A scheduled two-day tennis contest between teams representing Canterbury and the West Coast was restricted in Greymouth to part of one day owing to rain. No play was possible on Saturday and after the courts had been swept before midday yesterday singles matches were commenced. These, however, were twice interrupted by showers.

Canterbury won all but one of the men's singles while the women’s singles were divided at two all. F. Aynsley. of West Coast, could be counted rather unlucky in his match against W. Pritchard, Canterbury’s number one player. With the score at five-all in the first set rain interrupted play and upon resumption Pritchard went on to win, 7-5.

Aynsley won the second set comfortably at 6-2, and was leading 4-1 in the third set when rain again caused a cessation. Again the respite proved an advantage to Pritchard who took the deciding set at 6-5. A very meritorious performance was registered by the young Greymouth girl, Elaine Ogilvie, who beat one of Canterbury’s leading players. Mrs A. Ryan, in three sets. It was a very keen contest in which Miss Ogilvie never wavered in her concentration. The results were as follows, Canterbury players being named first:— Men's Singles.—W. Pritchard beat F. Aynsley, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5; G. Moss beat D. Radford. 6-4. 6-4; B. Judge beat O. Harrison, 6-2, 6-3: B. Crofts beat I. Hay, 6-3, 6-2; R. Watson beat G. Parsons. 0-6, 6-0, 7-5; T. IggO lost to M. Bellis, 4-6, 4-6. Women’s Singles.—Mrs A. Ryan lost to Miss E. Ogilvie, 9-7. 3-8, 4-6; Miss J. Edwards beat Mrs M. Buchanan, 6-3, 6-3; Miss B. Dawson lost to Mrs M. Ross. 3-6, 5-7: Miss J. Mattoon beat Mrs N, Wollatt. 3-5.
