O’Brien Breaks Shot Record

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MILWAUKEE (Wisconsin), Mar. 13. Parry O’Brien broke his wdrd Indoor 161 b shot put record last night with a tremendous heave of 62 feet 5 inches in the ninth annual “Milwaukee Journal” games. The throw was three and a quarter inches better than O’Brien’s recognised record of 62ft Uin, set at Madison Square Garden last year. Last night’s leather-jacketed weight had gained weight, because it had become wet. The throw was 11 inches short of O'Brien’s outdoor throw, which is awaiting official ratification. His official outdoor world record is 63ft 2in—the throw which won him his 1856 Olympic gold medal in Melbourne. However, last Saturday week in Los Angeles, Dallas Long threw 63ft 7in, which will probably be submitted for official ratification along with O'Brien's shorter distance. In Fort Worth, Texas, earlier in the day, another American Olympic champion, Bobby Morrow, went through his paces over 100 and 200yard sprint courses after a year’s leg trouble. Morrow won both special events in 9.ssec and 21.3 sec. Morrow said after the start of his campaign to be chosen for the Olympic Games team: “It was the first test for the leg, and I was surprised at the results.”
