TOURISTS FROM SOUTH AFRICA
Price Differences Noticed
The price of grapes, meat, milk and cheese in New Zealand have surprised three tourists from South Africa, Misses E. and H. Hanna, of Johannesburg, and Miss D. MacKenzie, of Nelspruit. They were amazed that grapes should be at least four times the price of grapes in South Africa: and that lamb chops could be bought in Christchurch for 2s 8d per lb against 4s 6d in their country, they said yesterday. Milk and cheese were also much cheaper in New Zealand.
The visitors have been most impressed by the friendliness of the New Zealand people. “Why, you just ask someone in the street were to get to some place, and before you know, you are talking as if you were old friends,” one said. “We are really proud of our South African gardens, but considering that ours are cared for by employed natives, we must give you the credit,” they s«id.
