CYCLING TITLES
The Auckland Amateur Cycling Association did much, through its excellent organisation, to make the 1960 New Zealand amateur championships at Western Springs stadium a success, and it was unfortunate that its efforts were partly ruined by some of the poorest and inconsistent refereeing seen at a national championship meeting. The standard of refereeing at this, and at the 1959 championships, was such that a national council action for future title meetings would be warranted.
One decision which earned the displeasure of the crowd was the disqualification of the OtagoSouthland pursuit team in the first round. The disqualification was far too drastic a penalty for the minor offence it was alleged the team had committed. The disqualification brought Canterbury back into the semi-final and its time was the slowest of any of the pursuit teams and 16.4 sec slower than Otago-Southland.
One of the refereeing inconsistencies occurred in the semifinal of the pursuits, when a Wellington rider had a puncture. So
that he could continue, he changed his cycle with a rider not in the event—a course that is not permitted. For this breach, Wellington should have been disqualified, but nothing was done. There were other, and worse, refereeing faults.
