Ewe Values From Par To Easier At Culverden

The better class of twotooth ewe was a shilling or two easier at the Culverden ewe fair yesterday, but other classes held near late rates. A comparison of values over a series of pens sold yesterday and earlier in the week at Amberley showed the average level of values not to be markedly different for young ewes. Older ewes with a reputation as good shifters and sound in the mouth and in reasonably good condition met a keen inquiry at values fully up to late rates, but others lower in condition and of uncertain vintage were not so easy selling and tended easier. Over all the sale could be considered a satisfactory one, taking quality into account, with an excellent clearance being made of a much bigger entry than last year. The entry totalled 25.259 head including 6216 two-tooths, 18,895 older ewes and 148 ewe lambs. Last year the overall tally was 19.544.

The sheep tn this fair differ from those seen at other fairs in N'irth Canterbury in that they are in harder condition coming mainly off hill country. On this account they have a large following of regular buyers as they are recognised as good shifting sheep, though they may not have the same polish as sheep seen elsewhere.

The two-tooths were possibly a slightly better selection than last year but they again included a fair sprinkling of medium to lower condition and smaller sheep. Included in the selection, however, were some splendid well grown sheep and strangely enough these hardly earned the premium that has been paid at other fairs. The older ewes were hardly up to the standard of other years, a weakness in the offering lying in the uncertain vintage of a number of the entries. While the good to better class twotooths tended to ease from late good rates, other classes of young ewes held to about recent rates and in comparison with last year's fair 11 pens sold yesterday averaged 3s 6d better than 10 pens from the same vendors at last year's sale. The best of the two-tooths realised from 56s to 675; good 43s to 545, average 40s to 43s and small and plain made from 29s to 335. Free Sale In the older ewe section there was a free sale at firm values for any lines well-known to buyers and coming up to requirements in respect of mouth and condition. Sheep in this category sold regularly between 23s and 425. However, buyers were . not often prepared to take all of the sheep in the big Lines offered and these were regularly sold in two or three consignments. For sheep low in the mouth and lower in condition selling was not so easy but the market tended to be irregular with some quite good sales being made of this class of sheep. For the best of the four-year-olds values ranged from 32s to 42s with good at 27s to 31s. average at 20s to 26s and others at 17s to 20s. At these values the sale showed a quite useful improvement on the fair held last year near the end of the drought. For 10 pens of four-year-olds sold yesterday the average was 30s 6d. which was 4s 6d higher than for 11 pens from the same properties which changed hands at last year’s auction.

Most of the five-year-olds were sold towards the close of about four and a half hours’ selling. For the best of these making from 25s to 30s prices were comparable with late rates, but averagfe and inferior ewes looked to be easier with more sheep making around the 14s and 15s mark. For comparable sheep sold yesterday and a year ago the over-all average for the sale was about the same as last year. The best of the five-year-olds made from 25s to 30s with average to good at IBs to 23s and others at 6s to 15s. Two pens of ewe lambs realised from 29s to 4«s 6d, the top figure being paid for Corriedales from Grueber Estate, Ltd. (Bexhill Pastures).

Buying Support In the large offering passings were comparatively rare. Buying power was fairly widespread with sheep being purchased for districts including Rangiora, Cust, Springbank, Aylesbury, Sandy Knolls, West Melton, Dunsandel, Bankside and Rakaia.

Top price at auction for two-tooth ewes was 675, paid for 200 Corriedales from R. Bethell i Terrace Paddocks). The remaining 110 in this line realised 655. Seventy-two sheep from Grueber Estate, Ltd. (Bexhill Pastures), changed hands during the sale at 665. J. I. Johns (Royden) sold 66 at 655, and sales at 64s were made by Ballindalloch Farm. Ltd. (Culverden), for 72, and by W. M. Norrie (Balnabreich) for 71. An after-auction sale at 62s 6d was made for 70 from A. S. Wilson (The Terraces). and the Mount Benger Estate sold 142 under the hammer for 61s. In the four-vear-old section values went up to 42s for 120 Corriedales from A. T. Black (Rockend), and another 190 from the same vendor made 40s. D. L. Rutherford (Leslie Hills) sold 75 ewes at 39s and 149 at 38s. A. F. S. Rutherford (Montrose) also had 340 at 33s and 165 at 355, and sales at 34s were made on account of the estate F. and J. Northcote (Whalesback) for 340. and Macfarlane Estate. Ltd. (Kaiwarra), for 464. c The highest price in the five-year-old section was 30s for 69 halfbreds from D. L. Rutherford (Leslie Hills). T. W. Bamford (Hurunui) also sold 115 at 235, and the estate A. Earshman (Hitchin Hills) realised 25s 6d for 335. Mrs M. S. Iverach (Stroma) sold 93 four and five-year-olds at 30s, and D. H.
