GORSE ROUTED WANGANUI PRODUCTION GAINS I rSfeiWvl Mr >,u * ruru * Me (Mi. 28*1 I.C.i. Hairt F'wf.eHM Hold Offleat. W««e*nilt Significant production gains on numerous Wanganui farms have beyond doubt proved from recently developed 1.C.1. techniques in gorse eradication. It is interesting to outline the results achieved on one representative Wanganui farm employing the Helicopter Spraying' Service pioneered by I.C.L in conjunction with I.C.l’s outstandingly successful weedkiller, "Butoxone” 2,4,5-T. History of Treatment This particular 300 acre property was purchased early in 1956. At that time 100 acres were in solid gorse, 50 acres in scattered gorse. Only ISO sores were cleared and in grass! During the summer of 1958-57, 10 acres of solid gorse were Helicopter sprayed with “Butex-. one” 2,4,5-T at a cost of approximately £lO per acre. Eight months later this area was burnt, sown and top-dresied, and today it supports two sheep to the acre with negligible gorse regrowth. In 1957-58, a further 20 acres of solid gorse were sprayed by Helicopter, and, following the same after-management are now in grass. In 1958-59 30 acres further were sprayed and win be burnt, sown and top-dressed when the gorse has completely broken down. In addition, 30 acres of scattered gorse has been completely eradicated by high pressure ground equipment and “Butoxone” 2,4,5-T at the rate of 1 to 250. Today, only 40 acres remain in solid gorse, 30 are sprayed ana await burning and 210 cleared and in grass! Production Improvement. On this farm, in 1958-57, 5» ewes yielded 42001 b of wool. In 1958-59, 54401 b were clipped from 500 ewes and 140 wethers. By 1961 it is estimated that ths capacity of this farm will be 850 ewes, and the clip, 73001 b. Cattle numbers, too, have been increased from 23 in 1956 to 34 in 1959. 1.C.1. Service. Helicopter spraying Is another service pioneered and per' fected by 1.C.1. to aid the New Zealand farmer. Indeed, 1.C4. have the answer to any weed problem. 1.C.1. advice is freely available to any farmer, in any district, at any time, completely without obligation, from any branch of the following 1.C.1Plant Protection distributors:— DALGETY & CO., LTD. 1 R.
