Winter Olympics N.Z. MEN FAIL

Missed Gates In Slalom iN .2 Preet Association— Copyright i SQUAW VALLEY (California), February 25. New Zealand’s male skiers completed their competition in the 1960 Winter Olympic Games yesterday when both were disqualified in the first of the two runs down the ordinary Slalom course on KT22. Both men missed the gates. The New Zealand team manager (Mr Dick Duncan) expressed disappointment with the showing of the two—R. S. Chaffey, aged 25, and W. F. Hunt, aged 31 —after the good form they had shown in training. Mr Duncan said: “Both chaps trained hard and. went to bed early, gave up parties and so on —generally showing great keenness.” The New Zealand girls, Misses Patricia Prain and Cecilia Womersly, took a conducted tour yesterday of the woman’s slalom course in preparation for their event today. In the glorious sunshine which bathed Squaw Valley’s snow for the sixth successive day, both girls went over the course with other competitors under the direction of Olympic officials. Miss Womersley and Miss Prain are both keen to improve still further on their showing to date. Sixteen-year-old Miss Womersley throughout yesterday received congratulations for her fine and courageous showing in the giant slalom the day before.
