Cricket AUSTRALIANS AT NELSON

Win By Innings And 109 Runs (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, February 25. The Australians’ spinners routed Nelson-Marlborough-Hutt Valley this afternoon to give the visitors an innings win 45 minutes from stumps. I. Quick dismissed I. B. Leggat, I. Ching, and R. Young in three overs, and J. Martin took two of the other wickets. The combined side was all out for 149, losing by an innings and 109 runs. After a dogged fourth-wicket stand by R. Young and B, Clarke for 41 had been broken there was not much substance left in the innings. Quick, who spun the ball viciously at times, then took his three wickets, But Clarke was not so easy to shift. His 45 was a gallant effort. It included five boundaries, and ended when he hit his wicket. D. Currie had the crowd with him when he attacked the slow bowlers. He hit seven boundaries in his 35. Quick looked the most likely to rout a side on a turning wicket. His spin at times completely beat the wicket-keeper. With the Australians taking their overnight score to 405, the combined side faced a deficit of 258 when it opened its second innings at 2.30 p.m., and it lost L. Reade and D. Spence before a run had been scored. R. Gaunt, bowling with more fire than previously, trapped Reade with his pads in front, and then bowled Spence with his next ball. Craig Scores 124 I. Craig’s form was particularly heartening to the . Australians. He scored 124, batting much more confidently, and forcing the ball well on either side of the wicket. J. Lili was another who must find a place in the second test team. His innings of 70 was almost faultless, and his back cuts were outstanding. J. Potter and G. Thomas scored freely enough, with the latter playing some explosive drives off the back foot. The Australians tried to force the pace to allow Craig to declare, but found Spence’s leg spinners hard to get away. Spence moved the ball appreciably and varied his pace well. He was supported by some brilliant catching, and finished with six for 34 off 11.2 overs. The combined side was outstanding in the field, with Reade, Ching, M. Wilson, and Clarke taking seemingly impossible catches. Scores:—
