A.J.C. Handicapper's High Rating Of Horses From N.Z.

I From me Australian Correspondent 01 ‘The Press “l

SYDNEY, Fe>. 23. The A.J.C. handicapper, Mr K. Goodwin, has rated New Zealand horses as every bit as good as the Australians. He showed this in his handicapping of the fields for the Doncaster Handicap and th? Sydney Cup, the feature races at the forthcoming centenary meeting at Randwick during Easter. The Doncaster Handicap is run over one mile on April 16 and the Sydney Cup over two miles on April 18. Todman is the top-weight in the Doncaster Handicap with 9-13, which is 111 b over weight-for-age; Tulloch’s weight is 10-0 for the Sydney Cup which is 101 b above weight-for-age. Their respective stables have declared that neither horse is likely to start, not because of dissatisfaction with handicaps, but because other plans have been made for them that do not include handicaps in the programmes. Eight of the top nine handicapped for the Sydney Cup are

New Zealand-bred horses. The exception is Lord Gavin,. Victorian bred by Black Pampas (imp.) which, with 9-2 is equal third rating with Sir Blink and Great Sensation. Macdougal the winner in succession of the Brisbane Cup, A.J.C. Metropolitan and the Melbourne Cup is second top-weight to Tulloch with 9-5. This rating has pleased Macdougal’s trainer who has high hopes of the stayer now sweeping the pool by winning the Sydney Cup. Froth has 9-1 in both the Doncaster Handicap and the Sydney Cup, a similar weight with another top-line New Zealand horse Stylish Officer. The high opinion of the handicapper extends to the younger New Zealand horses. He has handicapped the New Zealand three-year-old Lord Sasanof 8-8 in the Doncaster Handicap. This is only 31b less than the weight given Martello Towers which in the spring was regarded as one of the best three-year-olds Australian breeding has produced for many years. Actually Noholmc outshone Martello To vers, and the handicapper has declared Noholme the best three-year-old by giving him lib more than Martello Towers in the Doncaster Handicap. Noholme is the early favourite for the Doncaster Handicap and New Zealand-bred Travel Boy is early favourite for the Sydney Cup. Travel Boy has been given every chance by the handicapper, which placed him in 8-5 in the Sydney Cup. 11b lower than Martello Towers. Travel Boy is coming through his preparation for the autumn campaign in great style. His trainer T. J. Smith regards the colt as outstanding and declares that he will win the St. Leger and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Melbourne. Travel Boy probably will be kept to weight-for-age racing until the Sydney Cup so that he will not incur any penalty for the Cup. Travel Boy is by Marco Polo 11, a breed greatly favoured by Smith. On Saturday he won with another son of that sire, World Tour, which easily ran away from a field of restricted class gallopers over 10 furlongs at Rosehill. World Tour is a half-brother to the good winners. Poetical. Coppice, and Steel Grey. His dam is Foxwood, which is by Foxbridge from Hazelwood, by Day Comet. New Zealand-owned horses to run into minor places at Rosehill were Winnipeg (Pride of KildareWinning Flight) owned by Messrs L. S. Otway and D. H. Blackie; and Lochie (Callander-Te Anau Lady) owned by Mr D Macfarlane, Christchurch and trained by A. E. Didham Winnipeg was second to Primrose Lane in the Two-Year-Old Handicap. Lochie was third to Nevero Mist and Ulandra in the February Handicap, one mile and a quarter. GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB CENTENNIAL MEETING MARCH 12-14 NOMINATIONS for all events at the above meeting close with the Secretary on MONDAY NEXT, February 29. at 4 p.m. R. F. FITZGERALD, Secretary, Albert street, GREYMOUTH. ’Phone 7199; P.O. Box 72, —Advt.
