AUSTRALIAN IMPORTS

More Consumer Goods Likely (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA. February 24. Australia’s virtual abandonment of import restrictions is expected to result in substantial increases in the imports of consumer goods. These goods include textiles, clothing, travel goods, electronic components and pharmaceutical preparations. Trade authorities in Canberra expect a number of countries to make concerted bids to capture a slice of the Australian market for these goods. Other goods which importers in Australia are keen to obtain from overseas are timber, capital equipment including transport equipment, and agricultural and industrial chemicals. Australian importers and manufacturers expect the bulk of the goods to come from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Communist China.
