Television, Stage, Radio Shows

For the duration of the Industries Fair there is varied entertainment every afternoon and evening, with special features arranged for Saturdays and some other mornings.

AU the entertainment will be held in the entertainment hall on the upper storey of the fair buildings, where provision has been made for television and full connexion to the broadcasting system.

There will be television shows every day, with the entertainment on the stage telecast to viewers throughout the fair on a closed circuit. They, and the broadcast shows, will be compered by Jack Maybury, the radio entertainer, whose voice and face have become familiar to Industries Fair crowds in the post-war years.

Bands from all round Christchurch and further afield have been engaged to play at the fair on every day it is open.

Entertainment will be provided every day by the “Daredevil Leone,” presenting gymnastics at the top of a swaying 90ft pole, and his wife, “Miss Tarnyia,” who will perform on the trapeze. Another regular daily performer with be Pierre Mafia, who will give recitals on a locally-built organ.

Ventriloquism, lightning sketches, magic and country and Scottish dancing will be variety items interspersed with the regular stage shows.

9k new type of entertainment for the fair is the “Princess of Industry” and “Queen of Industry” contests. The “Princess” competition is limited to girls up to the age of 14, but among the entries for the “Queen” there are several married women. Initially, the contest will be on the same lines as a bathing beauty contest; but as the final draws near more exacting qualifications will be wanted of the competitors for the crown. Finalists will appear’ in evening dress, and be judged on poise, personality and intelligence as well as beauty. Prizes amounting to more than £750 in value have been given for the contest.

Highlights of the fair entertainment apart from the regular daily performances will include:—

Thursday, February 25.— Doors open 7 p.m. 7-8 p.m., Derrys Band; 7.30 p.m., Pierre Matla organ recital: 8.30, official opening by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway); 8.30-8.45 p.m., Miss Tarnyia, trapeze artist from England; 8.45-9.15 p.m., “Daredevil Leone,” working from a 90ft pole.

March 2.—Salvation Army Citadel Band and concert party; country dancing by Caledonian Society members; Scottish country dancing. Thursday, March 3.— Christchurch Ladies’ Pipe Band; Pearl Schumacher. Friday, March 4.— Scottish Society Pipe Band. Saturday, March 5. —Radio show for children; De Lamo, magician; second heat of "Princess of Industry” contest; North Caledonian Pipe Band; Watson Raines, ventriloquist; third heat, “Queen of Industry” contest.
