Prepared

Organising a fair involves much more than seeing that the exhibits are all ready for opening night, and one of the things to which great attention is given is the arranging , of emergency precautions ana a service to protect the public.

Constant inspections of the buildings are made by firemen on the look-out for possible hazards. Displays are supervised to see that they do not create fire dangers. An emergency alarm system has been installed throughout the buildings. The emergency service enables a call from one of many points to go through the central office, from where it is immediately relayed on to the reepopsible service—fire, police, nursing or administrative. ;

The police detachment assigned to the fair moves into a police station at the fair. Thenpresence has been helpful on many occasions in the past, although the crowds that flock to the fair are law-abiding and goodhumoured. But the policemen have solved many a minor dispute between showmen and patrons, acted as guardians of hundreds of lost children and become the custodians of countless small articles of lost property.

St. John ambulance workers are on duty throughout the fair and their first-aid room is always ready to deal with any accident. Another emergency service ready is a stand-by power plant, which could take over the load if there was to be a power failure. And the electrical load of the fair is substantial, with about 30 miles of wiring and cable running around the buildings connecting public address systems, electrical installations, lighting and telephones.
