INVERCARGILL WOOL SALE

2i Per Cent Drop In Most Grades (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, February 24. Although. fine crossbreds showed only a slight easing, the market generally was 2} per cent, cheaper, says the official report of the first day today of the Invercargill wool sale. Today 23,196 bales were sold. The remaining 23,800 bales will be offered on Friday. The clip opened up in good style and colour. The wools generally were longer than those offered in December, but a large proportion showed tenderness in the staple. A fairly large selection of lambs’ wool was offered but with the exception of a few well-picked lets the quality was only average to good. woolly hoggets, except for a few .choice lots, were not up to the standard of the last sale. Oddments were generally good. Continental Buying The bulk of the offering was taken up by the Continental trade, with a fairly large proportion of the remainder going to the United Kingdom. There was some interest in carpet types from the United States, while Japanese interests were mainly concerned with Southdown and down cross types. There was a decline of Id per lb on the prices obtained for comparable wool sold in Christchurch on Friday, and a bigger drop on the prices ruling at the first day of the Christchurch sale. Prices today were much better than those ruling at the February sale here last year, when, the average price was a little over 37d per lb. The average today was probably between 42d and 44d.
