MALVERN BEATS SUBURBAN

Sub-Association Shield Match By beating Suburban in a match which concluded at Greendale yesterday. the Malvern Sub-association cricket team qualified for the final of the Sub-Association Shield competition. Malvern will meet North Canterbury in this final next month. Continuing its first innings yesterday, Suburban made a brave attempt to catch Malvern’s score of 336. Resuming with seven wickets down for 172, the Suburban batsmen, A. Tizzard and R. Steele, carried their eighth-wicket partnership to 176 before Tizzard was dismissed by a good catch by A. Wright off his own bowling. In its second innings Malvern lost its first three wickets for 13 runs, but a patient innings by B. Rldgen, and some free hitting by later batsmen. brought a final total of 259. Suburban, which had to win outright to gain a place tn the final, was left with 299 runs to make in only 80 minutes. When stumps were drawn the score was 191 for five wickets. These runs were scored from only 18 eight-ball overs from the Malvern bowlers. Bowling for Suburban in Malvern's second innings, D. Youll took four good wickets with his right-arm medium-paced bowling. You!! was well supported by the off-breaks of F. Anderson, who also took four wickets.
