ITALIAN GOVERNMENT MAY RESIGN
Long And Unpredictable Crisis Expected (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 1130 p.m.) ROME, February 24. The Christian Democrat Government of Mr Antonio Segni is expected to resign after a Cabinet meeting today, one of the Prime Minister’s aides said last night. Political observers said the resignation, if accepted by Italy’s President, Mr Giovanni Gronchi, would touch ofi a long and unpredictable crisis. The collapse of the year-old Government is the result of the decision on Sunday by the small but influential Liberal Party to withdraw its support.
The Liberals in an overwhelming vote, said they felt the Christian Democrats were “drifting too far to the Left.”
Without the Liberals, Mr Segni could still command a comfortable majority in the Chamber of Deputies, where his party is 26 short of an absolute majority. This would mean relying on the support of the Monarchists and Neo-Fascists and he is understood to prefer to resign.
