CYCLING Keen Competition In Events At English Park
Keen competition marked the cycling events at English Park last night Hazeldine, right on the top of his form, won three of the four events he entered. If he can maintain this form for another week when he will be competing at the National Championships, he must be a prospect for the Rome Games. One of the attractions was the special match between K. Wilbraham (Auckland) and K. Brown (Christchurch). In their first encounter, a 500-metre sprint, Wilbraham jumped from the inside position to take the lead with one lap to go. Nearing the back straight Wilbraham increased his pace to have a two-length lead at the 220-yard mark, Brown moved at great speed to go round Wilbraham and win by a length. In their second match, a two-lap pursuit. Brown really turned on the pace over the last quarter-mile. He won by 15 yards. Their final match, a four-lap tan-dem-paced event, was won by Brown.
In the 500-metre sprint between B. Hazeldine, Canterbury and New Zealand junior sprint champion, took the lead at the start, but on the top banking while he was watching G. Hill. T. Weir slipped through to the front. In the back straight Weir increased his pace with Hazeldine on his wheel, and round the bottom banking Hazeldine went into the lead to win easily. The main amateur features were the three races for A and B grade riders for the H, and T. and B.A.L. Cups, competed for on a points system. Results:— Cash Events One Lap, Handicap.—First heat: M.
