Farm Worker’s Complaint
Sir,—A student of agriculture, I have worked on various farms throughout New Zealand and I am disgusted at the attitude many farmers have toward their employees. These farm workers, who naturally want only a satisfying and rewarding occupation, are continually subject to complaints, bad tempers, and bad manners. I know youths who are expected to work 12 to 14 hours a day six or seven days a week during the summer months and get £7 or £8 a week and keep; their employers failing to employ sufficient labour. If these lads should ever complain or disagree with the farmer, their bonus (their only recognisable overtime pay) is cut from a low figure to a ridiculous one. Farm workers’ qualifications are: strong back, thick hide, thick head, and a tongue that says nothing but “Yes, sir.”—Yours, etc SICK OF IT. February 13, 1960.
