OURUHIA SCHOOL BATHS

Official Opening Ceremony

The Ouruhia School baths were officially opened on Saturday before a good attendance which included the builder, Mr N. Wingham, and Mr Chaney, the advising officer of the Canterbury Education Board. The headmaster of the Elmwood School (Mr W. J. Cartwright) congratulated the head teacher of the Ouruhia School (Mr R. F. Armstrong), the staff and the community for the cooperation which had brought about the construction of the pool. The school was fulfilling its position as the country model for students from the Teachers’ College, he said. Mr W. H. Gillespie, M.P., commended the community for the effort put into the construction of the baths. He emphasised the importance of learning to swim. New Zealand had to stop the appalling number of deaths caused through drowning, said Mr Gillespie. Mrs C. C. Holland, on behalf of the Canterbury Education Board, thanked those responsible for building the pool. She urged the children to learn to swim well and to learn life-saving. Children, under the direction of Miss V. Phillips, demonstrated the various stages of learning to swim.
