HOUSE SURGEON SHORTAGE
Submissions To Conference
The Minister of Health (Mr Mason), has informed the president of the Christchurch House Surgeons’ Association that any submissions his association make to a conference called to consider the shortage of house surgeons will be considered, said the president of the association. He had just returned from the North Island where he saw the Minister. The association intends to make its submission# by February 19 The association intends to make submissions along the lines of the statement it gave to “The Press” last month. In its statement the association outlined three suggestions for easing the shortage They were:— That smaller hospitals which now employ one, two or three house surgeons could be staffed entirely by local practitioners, allowing the present staff to move to larger hospitals. That Asiatic doctors who have completed their training in their own countries could be encouraged to come to New Zealand and work as house surgeons before returning to their homes to practice. That immigrant doctors be compelled to work for a period of one year as house surgeons before starting up in private practice.
