ATHLETICS International Match In Christchurch In March
The New South Wales women’s athletics team, which is to make a short tour of the Dominion next month, will run in Christchurch during the national women’s and junior championships on March 11 and 12. Advice of this has been received by the Canterbury athletic centre from the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr G. H. Geddes). Three of the seven events in the official test competition between New Zealand and New South Wales will be held during these championships. These will be the 100 yards, the 80 metres hurdles and the long jump. Four other events, the 220 yards, the high jump, the discus throw and the relay, will be held in Auckland on March 19. In Christchurch, the 89 metres hurdles and the long jump will be held in conjunction with the national women’s titles in these events. In the hurdles the New Zealand representatives will be chosen after the heats, and in the long jump after the qualifying grounds. The 100 yards event in the international contest will be held as a seperate event on Saturday, March 12, and the New Zealand competitors will be chosen after the national title is held on the preceding day. The Canterbury centre has been asked by Mr Geddes to place, if possible. Misses B. Cuthbert and M. Mathews, two members of the visiting team, in the Anal of the national women’s 220 yards event. The chairman (Mr K. S. Jameson) said that this would mean putting in two extra lanes, which would mean that the two competitors who had the inside lanes would suffer. Mr E. Lunn said that the rules for the championships laid down that championship athletes had first choice of lanes, and any overseas competitors had to take what remained. It would scarcely be possible to accomodate the
visitors in the relay event, said Mr Jameson, as this would need an extra lane right round the track. The Australian athletes will also be permitted to compete in the discus and high jump events at the national championships, but to permit competition in the 440 yards event would raise problems similar to those posed by the relay. Registration The national association also advised that . all members of affiliated clubs must be registered as runners, and their subscriptions paid to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mr E. 'Lunn asked whether this would apply to those who held honorary positions such as vicepresidents. Mr Jameson replied that, according to the rule, all officials, and sportsmasters at schools, must be registered with the national association as runners. Mr N. A. Smith was elected to fill a vacancy oh the centre executive. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association advised that the Christchurch Post-Primary Schoolgirls’ Athletic Centre had been granted affiliation. Mr J. Cameron was appointed manager of the Canterbury team to compete in the national men’s championships in Invercargill on March 4 and 5. The following Canterbury records were ratified: G. F. Hack, 880 yards, Imin 53.25ec and lmin 51.8 sec; P. J. Morrissey, 440 yards, 48.9 sec; Miss V. Sloper, shot put, 54ft sjin; Miss V. Sloper, discus throw, 164 ft Ilin; R. G. Ball, javelin throw, 209 ft BJin; Miss M. Chamberlain, 440 yards, 55.95ec (from February 14, 1959).
