WINNERS AT HOKITIKA

Young Donald And Synthetic

(From Our Own Reporter) , GREYMOUTH, February 15. Backers of the favourites in the Arahura Trot Handicap at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting today fared badly. Commonwealth, which was supported with much confidence, refused to go away properly, while Early Edition fell at the end of half a furlong and checked some of the other runners. Young Donald led throughout to win by a length from Zulu Maid. Drumquin was a similar distance back third, and Dryden Maid was fourth. These three had followed the leader in that order from the start, but at no stage did Young Donald appear likely to lose the lead. Synthetic and Battle Hymn were the next to cross the line after Dryden Maid. Synthetic, owned by Mr E. Ryan and trained and driven by the Templeton reinsman, K. Purdon, led all the way in the Kaniere Trot Handicap. She handled the wet track well, and won by four lengths from Second Lady. Early Edition trailed the leader, with Drumquin and Second Lady next. There was a big gap back to the others. Synthetic led round the home turn. Early Edition made a shortlived effort to catch the leader in the straight, but was passed by Second Lady and Drumquin. Second Lady beat Drumquin by four lengths for second, and Early Edition tired to fourth. Next were Young Donald and Sarlita, which headed a very tired lot.
