OFFICIAL REPORT
The official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrdkers’ Association, in conjunction with the Woolbuyers' Association and the Wool Commission of New Zealand, states: “The third main sale of > the 1959/60 wool season was held in Christchurch yesterday when the first portion of a three-day sale was submitted. The total offering of 62,428 bales Is probably a record for New Zealand but, as not more than about "22,000 bales is to be offered on any one day, this is not held to be excessive. “The wools were drawn from all parts of Canterbury and also from Blenheim, Nelson, the West Coast and Chatham Islands. Quality and condition showed a great variation. Halfbreds and Corriedales, while showing a certain amount of dust, were generally well grown and free from yolk stain and there were a number of attractive lines on offer. The Romney wools, however, have evidently not stood up so well to the dry conditions and many of these were dusty and discoloured, and rather thin in the staple. The general condition was noticeably heavier than at the earlier sales. Ewe wools made up the bulk of the offering, the balance consisting of hoggets, lambs wool and a sprinkling of second-shear and crutchings. “There was a full bench of buyers and the sale opened with a firm tone, competition being well spread and at times animated. In line with recent trends the market showed a falling tendency and as compared with the recent sale in Wellington crossbreds generally can be quoted as in buyers favour with the finer qualities about 2Vi per cent, lower. Halfbred and Merino wools showed a decline of 2\'a to 5 per cent, as compared . with December closing rates but met with good competition at the lower figure. "Continental buyers were again the chief operators with the local mills and Japan competing keenly for the best of the fine wools. Bradford was quiet but took a certain proportion of the stronger qualities. The sale was a quick one and practically a full clearance was made at auction.”
