WATER SHORTAGE AT WYCOLA

Restriction On Hosing Continued

A shortage of water for domestic use and fire protection has made continuing restriction cn garden hosing necessary in the Wycola housing block at Hornby. The hosing of gardens or lawns is prohibited except for one hour each evening between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m. The water Supply system at the housing block, built by the housing construction division of the Ministry of Works, provided for a quota of 1000 gallons a day for each house—four to five times in excess of normal domestic requirements, said the Paparua County Clerk (Mr G. A. Kelly) yesterday. Because of the dry weather water consumption in the block had been abnormal, and the restriction on garden hosing had been necessary to ensure adequate domestic supply, and to maintain the reserve fire-fighting supply on the Wycola water tower.

The County Council’s new water scheme for Upper Riccarton, Sockburn, Hornby, and Islington is proceeding and will incorporate and augment the Wycola supply, Mr Kelly said.
