BUILDINGS AT SCOTT BASE
Work Well Ahead Of Schedule
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 15. In spite of delays caused by bad weather and late deliveries of materials, the hangar, generator building at Scott Base will be completed by the end of this month, well within the time allowed. This building programme involves several divisions of the Ministry of Works. A nine-man construction, party, led by Mr Randall Heke, foreman of the original Scott Base building team, left for the Antarctic in December. Seven of the nine men are New Zealand Army engineers. The auroral-radar housing at Arrival Heights, about three miles from Scott Base, is already finished apart from minor details, and the new powerhouse at Scott Base itself is working and has only to be connected with the main building by a covered way.
The steel framework for the hangar, which will house the R.N.Z.A.F.’s Antarctic flight, was erected about a fortnight ago.. The sides and roof are now being lined with plywood and canvas. The lining and the heated workshop spaces inside the building should be ready within the next few days.
