LOCAL BODY FINANCE

Government To State Policy

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. The Prime Minister (Mr Nash) today undertook to prepare a written outline of the Government’s attitude toward adoption of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Local Authority Finance. The president of the Municipal Association of New Zealand (Mr H. A. Anderson, of Mount Albert) reported this after an hour’s session with the Prime Minister today. The statement by the Prime Minister will be presented to the annual conference of the association, which will open on March 1 at Wellington. The commission’s report was presented in September, 1958. Apart from a reform of the National Roads Board’s pay-out structure, none of its recommendations has been adopted by the Government. These recommendations include one for a citizens’ tax, or a locally levied income tax. At its last annual conference at Napier, the association passed a resolution calling for the adoption of the report by the State.
