Obituary REV. J. MAGUIRE
The Rev Father James Maguire, a priest of the diocese of Christchurch, died in Lewisham Hospital, Sydney, yesterday. Father Maguire was born at Methven and studied for the oriesthood at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. After his ordination In 1925 Father Maguire was stationed at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christchurch, where he was inspector of schools.
In 1929 he was appointed professor of sacred scripture at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. After a period of duty in the Chatham Islands he was appointed administrator of the Cathedral in 1940. In 1942 he was appointed parish priest at Ross and later after spending some years at Lincoln he founded a new parish at Hanmer. Owing to ill-health Father Maguire retired in 1958 to a convalescent home in Sydney, A man of enduring qualities, Father Maguire brought to his priesthood a profound learning and an all-embracing charity and a remarkable capacity for friendship. A solemn pontfical Requiem Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament by Bishop Joyce on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
