N.Z. POPULATION 2,359,675
Increase Of 16,283 Since September
New Zealand’s population is now 2,359,675. There were 1,186,047 males and 1,173,628 females on December 31 last year, and the population increase since September 30 was 16,283. There were 156,837 Maoris in the Dominion at the end of the year. Of these 79.837 were males and 77,000 females. The Government Statistician (Mr J. V T. Baker) says that natural increase was responsible for a population increase of 10694 In the last quarter of the year. For the corresponding quarter of 1958 the natural increase was 11.384.
Latest population figures for the Pacific Island territories and the trust territory of Western Samoa are: Cook Islands 17.654 on December 31, 1958; Niue Island 4781 on September 30, 1959; Tokelau Islands 7861 on December 31. 1959; and Western Samoa 105.863 on December 31. 1959
