WEED CONTROL BY RAILWAYS
Land To Be Leased By Farmers
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 12. Measures to control noxious weeds on railway land were announced today by the Minister of Railways (Mr Moohan) who said that farmers are to be invited to occupy adjoining railway land in rural areas. The Minister said that after discussions with Federated Farmers and the Counties’ Association, it was proposed that where practicable, fences would be moved in as near as possible to the track, the Railways Department supplying any materials necessary and the landowners providing the labour. He said a reasonable rental would be charged, subject to the provision that where the condition of the Land justified it neither rental nor rates would be payable for periods up to seven years.
