Poaching In Soccer

The formation of a national soccer league as a means of preventing Australia from “poaching” top New Zealand soccer players, has been advocated by the chairman of the Eastern Union Association Football Club, of Gisborne, (Mr C. Whitley). Such a league might provide players with an incentive to stay in the Dominion, he said. As it was, New Zealand clubs could not match the Sydney clubs because they did not have the money to offer. Eastern Union recently lost the New Zealand full-back, D. J. Lapwood, the second player bought from the club in’a year. He is also the fifth New Zealand international to be attracted by Sydney offers. According to Mr Whitley, A. Moynihan, New Zealand outside-left last season, has also had an offer from a Sydney club.
