VETERINARY SCHOOL
Cabinet Decision “In Few Months”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 12. A decision on the establishment of a veterinary college in New Zealand will be made by the Government “within a few months,” the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) said today. “I think the time has come when we really should establish such a college in New Zealand,” said Mr Skinner, but he emphasised that the site for the college had not been determined. On Wednesday, the Senate of the University of New Zealand adopted a report from a subcommittee recommending Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, as a site for the school. Mr Skinner made it clear that the Senate had acted on its own initiative in making such a recommendation. It had not been asked to consider the matter by the Government but, because of the Senate’s wide experience in university education, its views would be given due weight when the matter was considered by the Government. The Senate’s views would be taken into consideration along with all other representations. A new veterinary college would include provision for postgraduate study, said Mr Skinner, and it could be expected that many more students would be catered for than are now sent to Australian schools for veterinary training. He said he expected a college could begin classes within two years of the decision being taken to establish it.
