N.Z. FRUITGROWING INDUSTRY

“Critical Year” "The Press'’ tiveciai Hsrvict HASTINGS, January 25. This was the most critical year in the history of the industry, said Mr J. H. Parker, chairman of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board, at a meeting of about 190 growers in Hastings. “We lost £433,000 last year,’’ he said, “but we paid growers about £6OO apiece more than we got out of the market. Growers had a record crop last year—but we had a tough year. “Over the previous eight years, however, we have averaged a profit of about £250,000 a year, and I wouldn’t be worried if the next eight years were to be the same, but they won’t be. “This year,” said Mr Parker, “if we can cover costs and come out right, we should be all right. But we’re going to need your help. But you are going to want us more than you have ever wanted us in your life in the years that lie ahead.”
