AGRICULTURAL PROTECTION
Study By G.A.T.T. (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, January 24. New Zealand is among the countries whose agricultural policy is to be examined by the twenty-one-nation General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade Committee which begins meetings in Geneva on January 25. Other countries whose policies will be examined include the United States, Austria, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, and Norway. Consultations will continue until April 15, and, says the “Daily Telegraph’s” correspondent, they will be an important phase of a world programme to expand international trade. “Examination of the general policy is to be followed by a discussion in specific commodities such as dairy products, meat, cereals, sugar, vegetable oils and fish. The object of these consultations, in which the policies of Britain and several Commonwealth countries have already been examined, is to bring about a reduction in agricultural protectionism.”
