Obituary MRS F. M. C. HARTLEY

Mrs F. M. C. Hartley, of Waikuku, has died in Rangiora. Mrs Hartley was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W. H. J. Tobin, of “Nevis,” Tauranga, and a grand-daughter of Major Charles Brown, first Superintendent of Taranaki province.

She was a great grand-daughter of Charles Armitage Brown who was known in early 19th century literary circles as the “Friend of Keats.”

He nursed Keats at his home in Hampstead throughout many illnesses and this house is now preserved as a Keats memorial by the Hampstead Council. Mrs Hartley was born in New Plymouth and spent her early life as a teacher in the Auckland district. Before her marriage she also taught at the* Takamatua School, Banks Peninsula. She was a member of the Anglican Church in Rangiora, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Sanctuary Guild and served a term as president of the Sefton Mothers’ Union. In World War II she was a member of the Rangiora Patriotic Society and throughout her married life she contributed stories and articles to New Zealand and Australian publications.

She is survived by her husband. four daughters, three sons and 20 grandchildren.
