MARKETING OF MEAT
“Commission Not
Required”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. *‘l believe all of us who are sheepfarming share with Mr Daniell his desire to see better returns from our meat; but, in my opinion, commission control of our exports is not required,” said Mr J. D. Ormond, chairman of the Meat Board, commenting tonight on the statement of a Masterton producer, Mr L. T. Daniell, proposing a meat marketing commission.
Mr Ormond has just returned from a study of meat markets in the United Kingdom and North America and from talks with the United Kingdom Government on meat trends and policies. “I agree with Mr Daniell that the present situation requires very critical examination and review of policies,” he said.
“I had a most useful meeting of my board today, at which I made a full report. I have some very definite ideas. In my opinion, a commission is not required. What is required is more drive in the industry, more effective use of the present system of marketing and a more active association of the board with it.” “Mr Daniell has, over the years, contributed much to producers’ thinking on such matters,” said Mr Ormond, “and I think he is right in bringing the topic forward at this time, but I do not agree that the present marketing situation is comparable with that of the 1921-22 period. As I stated only recently, I believe that pessimism about the immediate situation is unjustified.”
