FOREST AND BIRD SOCIETY

Summer Camp At Arthurs’ Pass

Members of the Forest and Bird Protection Society from all parts of New Zealand are attending the summer camp organised by the Canterbury branch at Arthur’s Pass. The first contingent arrived by rail-car from Christchurch on Friday night. All the camps are private cottages or club hostels. An official welcome was given by Mr I. H. Gray, secretary of the Canterbury branch, and Mr P. Croft, senior ranger at Arthur’s Pass National Park. On Saturday morning most of the campers walked to Otira, led by Professor L. W. McCaskill, who :.poke on the plant and bird life seen on the way. The party returned by rail through the tunnel. In the evening Professor McCaskill gave a talk, illustrated with colour slides, on the early history of the park, in the museum lecture hall.

Group photographs were taken on Sunday afternoon after which the campers walked to the Punchbowl and Bridal Veil Falls. They then attended a special service in the Arthur’s Pass chapel conducted by the Rev. G. Fitzgerald: Mr D. C. Morse, secretary of the National Park Board, showed colour slides and spoke on mountaineering in the park, in the evening.
