Exhibitions Of Skating

A team of British roller skaters, including the 1958-59 world roller dance champions, will appear at Sockburn school on Sunday, January 24, and at the Freeville school, New Brighton, on Monday evening. The team will give exhibitions of free-dance, dance pairs, freestyle and dance pairs skating. Led by the husband and wife pair, Sid and Pat Cooper, the world dance champions, the team includes Miss Maureen Jackson, who has held the British women's solo title for the last six years, and D. Kelly, the leading British speed skater, who holds the British one mile speed record of -2m in 54.45ec.

Kelly will compete in speed races against Canterbury skaters at the Sockbum and Freeville schools.

Miss Jackson has participated in world championships in recent years and has always been among the leading competitors. She took part in the 1955 world championships at Barcelona, when New Zealand was represented for the first time by John Baker, of Palmerston North, and Miss V. Whyte, of Napier. Kelly, who is only 20, has been racing for three years, and in 1958 he finished second in the 1000 and 10,000 metres, and third in the 5000 metres in the world titles. He is the British threemile champion.
