THE FIRST LANDING ON SCOTT ISLAND, just south of the Antarctic circle, was made this week by men from the United States Coastguard icebreaker Eastwind. This photograph was taken in December, 1956. It shows a whaler from H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki approaching Scott Island, which is a flat-topped rock, 128 feet high, bounded by steep cliffs. On this occasion, rough seas prevented a landing. The island was discovered 58 years ago.
